AGA has picked up a coveted product design award for its mould-breaking new cooker, ERA by AGA.
The prestigious Red Dot Award: Product Design 2024 reaffirms the AGA cooker’s place as a design icon and emphasises the brand’s focus on innovation. The award is part of one of the world’s most prestigious design
competitions and the Red Dot Label is one of the most sought-after marks of quality for good design across the globe.
ERA from AGA is where technology meets design and where heritage meets modernity. And it’s where glass is used extensively for the first time on a heat-storage range cooker to create a sleek, unified look.
The model features a completely new design from base up. Glass and chrome are used to stunning effect to create an entirely new feel for a heat-storage range cooker, and new techniques and the latest technology are employed to create all the external parts for a modern aesthetic. AGA Technical Director David Carpenter said: “We believe ERA is the world’s first heat-storage range combining a highly efficient fan oven alongside two cast-iron heat-storage ovens, making it not only innovative but also technically challenging. The award is a recognition for the entire team that worked on the project who, employing innovation in design and state-of-the-art technology, created a truly unique range cooker.”
ERA from AGA required the development of new digital electronic controls, a state-of-the-art touch-control user interface and complex software to precisely control all functions. The system monitors oven temperatures, power delivery, safety and power sharing, constantly adjusting parameters for efficiency and performance, which means it offers outstanding cooking performance. It also offers a highly efficient hotplate incorporating a four-zone induction hob alongside the more traditional AGA cast-iron cooking plate. The ovens are fully programmable via a remote handset, ensuring energy is not used unnecessarily and the user can benefit from reduced running costs.
Each element of ERA – including the pristine lines of the glass-fronted oven doors and the ergonomically designed handles – has been carefully considered to create a quietly assertive aesthetic.
Fish & Co founder David Fisher, Chief Creative Advisor to AGA, said: “Opportunities to reimagine a British icon like AGA rarely come along. And so drawing on its 100 year legacy, the time was right for a new ERA, fusing its rich heritage into contemporary lifestyles and modern aesthetics. I’m very proud to have provided the design vision and to continue working with such an expert team. To have Red Dot recognise this step forward is testament to the brand’s dedication to design excellence and unparalleled customer experience.”
