An explanation of the energy costs for cast-iron, heat-storage AGA cookers

AGA running costs are often misunderstood, largely because many people associate them with older AGA cookers that operated continuously, 24 hours a day.

Depending on electricity tariffs and individual household usage, the cast-iron, heat-storage AGA cookers we sell today typically cost around £25–£30 per week to run, and in many homes the cost can be even lower. (Based on an electricity price of 26.11p per kWh, July 2026.)

Many AGA owners use renewable energy sources, such as solar power, helping them make the most of the energy they generate while offsetting some of the cost of running their AGA cooker. The AGA cookers in our current collection are far better suited for renewables because you can turn down the ovens or switch off hotplates when not in use.

Modern AGA hotplates heat up in approximately 10–12 minutes, eliminating the need to leave them switched on all the time. Compared with older AGA cookers, this can reduce running costs by more than 50%.

In addition, all current cast-iron AGA cookers offer a range of energy-saving features. These can include lower temperature settings, programmable operation, independently controlled hotplates and ovens, multi-oven temperature options, and significantly improved insulation. These innovations allow owners to tailor the cooker's use to their cooking style while minimising energy consumption.

Unlike gas or oil AGA cookers, our current cast-iron, electric AGA cookers do not require annual servicing, helping to reduce the overall cost of ownership by up to £300 per year compared to a gas AGA cooker and £558 for an oil AGA.

It's also important to remember that an AGA is more than just a cooker. It provides ambient warmth, slow cooking, bread proving, plate warming and gentle drying as part of everyday life.

The true value of an AGA isn't measured by electricity alone, but by the moments it makes possible every day.
